started with a splinter. . .

About 2 months ago, I had some blood from my foot on my bedclothes.
When I looked, it was coming from the ball of my foot. I went to my
primary care doctor, and after an X-Ray, he decided to have an
orthopedic surgeon look at it.
The Orthopedic surgeon went in and pulled out 1/4 inch piece of metal
that I picked up from some unknown place. (I am a 20 year insulin
taking type 2 with lots of neuropathy among other aches and pains, but
my A1c is 5.8!!). That night it started to bleed profusely and I went
to the Urgent Care clinic, who redressed it. NOTE: this is a tiny
little hole on the bottom of my foot right behind my big toe on the
ball of the foot.
It has never healed, whenever we change the dressing, or remove the
dressing, within 36 hours the platelet plug pops, and it bleeds
profusely. I have had a lot of fun cleaning rugs, washing sheets and
blankets etc.
I removed the bandage Sunday night, started bleeding Monday, went to
our Physician Asst. Monday morning and had it worked on. Tuesday,
while having breakfast, it popped again, with blood all over the
carpet and kitchen floor. Went back to the HMO, and saw the first
available Doctor who redressed it, called for X-Rays, and made an
appointment with a Vascular Surgeon, who I see tomorrow. Today I saw
the PA, who cauterized the opening due to some vascular growth pushing
through the tiny hole in the callus (about 1/8 inch). He (the PA)
called for a wound care RN for a consultation.
No pain, just re-dress the wound with a large band aid and ACE
bandage, and wait for the blood to flow.
Can't really do much, since it is on the ball of my foot where I walk.

Wow! What a scary story. Hope the wound heals soon!

That is a really scary story, Les. The typical diabetic has the disease for
about 5 years before he is diagnosed. And during that time, unknown to him,
irreversible damage can be done in the form of peripheral neuropathy & in
other ways. That is the scariest part. That is how you could have this problem
even though your HBA1C is 5.8%.

Thanks for the replys, I'm waiting on the vascular surgeon, then I'll
know a lot more.
